Last week, Dalia and I went on a Gold coast holiday to escape the Melbourne Winter. However, on arriving at the hotel, I was faced with a conundrum. The hotel had clearly stated that we were on a ‘no smoking’ floor and yet each room had an ashtray carefully placed on every balcony.
This got me thinking about how in life we commonly question how we go about our daily lives. Are we saying what we really feel or just what we think others expect or want of us?
Take for instance the TV Soapie. Characters will interact with fake smiles plastered on their faces before running home to plot the other character’s demise. Though in real life we aren’t usually that bad, we too have tendencies to act like walking contradictions.
Even when not playing the role of doctor, I have become so used to the answer of ‘yeh not bad’ when I ask how somebody is feeling or how their day has been. Instead of using a double negative, try to lift your mood or say what you actually feel. A simple response of ‘good thanks’ can do fantastic things for you and the people around you.
So next time you get asked how you are, turn your frown upside down and don’t let yourself become a walking contradiction!
